Does Comfrey Tonique replace other fertilisers?
All plants and crops require regular feeding and a degree of soil preparation, and the incorperation of compost or rotted manure with the soil is highly recommended for building up organic matter content, increasing water retention, and providing soil micro-organisms with something to chew on.
Comfrey Tonic cannot replace compost or manure (for this we would recommend B-actif Alfalfa Plus or Comfrey pellets), but was developed as a supplement to routine additions of organic matter. It contains a wide range of trace-elements, essential macro-elements and natural growth promoters which are rarely available to shallow-rooted plants (see the “about comfrey” page). By maintaining an optimum carbon:nitrogen ratio, Comfrey Tonic does not have to go through lengthy bacterial breakdown processes for these nutrients to be assimilated by plants. In other words, they are instantly available for root uptake, and the visible effects on plant health, growth and yield are soon noticable.
B-actif Comfrey Tonic helps to create the ideal conditions for high populations of soil micro-fauna essential for the long-term health of soils and rapid decomposition of organic matter.
Comfrey Tonic does, however, replace plant feeds and supplements rich in trace-elements.

Can Comfrey Tonic be used on all plants?
Comfrey is naturally rich in a highly assimilable form of potassium, an element which favours and accelerates the budding, flowering and fruiting processes of plants. Therefore, any plant cultivated for its flowers or fruit will greatly benefit from regular applications of comfrey liquid throughout the growing season with noticibly increased vigour and yield. Examples include perennials like apples, plums and raspberries etc, and the annuals of the potato family (potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines etc.), the courgette family (including melons and pumpkins) and greedy plants like sweetcorn and various border shrubs (roses etc.).
Conversely, there are many vegetables which we strive to prevent from flowering (or “bolting”), these include the leaf vegetables (lettuces, chards, chives, spinach), stem plants (rhubarb, asparagus), roots (beets, radish), bulbs (onions, shallots), and head vegetables (brocolli, cauliflower) and should only receive comfrey applications at germination through to the second-leaf stage of their development.

Isn’t comfrey juice really smelly?
Unlike other commercially available plant-based infusions, our liquid concentrates do not stink! Using an extraction process which bypasses the fermentation stage, followed by the latest filtering techniques we are able to produce highly concentrated, stabilised extracts which retain only the sweet smell of the plant the day it was cut. Now usable indoors, in greenhouses and polytunnels!

Is B-actif Comfrey Tonique acceptable for organic production?
All B-actif products are 100% plant-based and conform to annex II of regulation CEE No.2092/91 amended 24/06/1991 NFU 42001, concerning the restriction of products usable in organic production.
